Joel Bartsch

Experienced Museum Leader Joel Bartsch

Based in Houston, Texas, Joel A. Bartsch has served as the president and CEO of the Houston Museum of Natural Science since 2004, having previously spent 13 years as the museum’s curator, as well as a project manager and director of earth sciences. Joel Bartsch effectively guided the museum to profitability after just one year as an executive leader.

Before joining the Houston Museum of Natural Science in 1988, Joel Bartsch served as the director and curator of the California State Mining and Mineral Museum. Earlier in his career, he served as the assistant to the director and curatorial assistant with the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum.

He holds a bachelor of arts in seminary studies from Concordia University. In 2001 he received a Distinguished Alumni Award from Concordia in the Outstanding Contributions in Science and Mathematics category. He played varsity baseball and golf during his time as an undergraduate. He also holds a master’s degree from Rice University, where he studied history and the history of science.
